Fake tanning tips… my routine

I am naturally fair skinned and live in the UK, so the ability for me to get a natural tan in England is pretty slim! I therefore result to using fake tan to give me a summery warm glow.

Here are my tips and tricks for applying fake tan and what products I use and recommend…

First things first, to avoid that patchy look with crusty elbows and knees, I always exfoliate my body and shave my legs before tanning. The body scrub I am loving at the moment is Sugar Crush by Soap and Glory, it smells amazing and leaves your skin soft and silky.

I am currently using a Gillette Venus Proskin Sensitive Razor and to be honest I think that all of the Gillette razors are really good. I normally buy the cheapest razor available!

Once I am out of the shower I then apply a moisturiser particularly lathering areas such as my knees and elbows which have dry skin. The moisturiser that I am loving at the moment is Soap and Glory's Righteous Body Butter (yes I love Soap and Glory). This also smells so yummy and is a thick and rich butter that really moisturises the skin.

After this is all sinked in I then apply my fake tan. When applying my tan I wear an older pair of knickers and an older strapless bra so I don't ruin any nice  underwear. I then stand in natural light (if possible) for example in my bathroom, and apply the tanning mousse with a tanning mit. I would really suggest a tanning mit when tanning as it prevents your hands from going a lovely shade of orange and also helps spread the mouse evenly over the body. I use one from Primark and it was only £2!

Over the years I have used quite a few different fake tans but the best and the cheapest by far is St. Moriz. This brand is available in Boots and it only costs around £4.99! St. Moriz is a bit of a copy cat of St. Tropez which is a well known tanning product which in comparison retails for around £20-30! Having never tried this product I could not say whether it is better or worse but St. Moriz does the trick for me at a fraction of the price.

To apply this I pump 1-2 pumps onto the mit and evenly spread over each section of the body. It usually takes me about one and a half pumps for each arm and 2-3 pumps for each leg.

Some say to avoid areas like the knees and elbows but I think it can look weird if you completely avoid them. I just gentle brush over these areas with whatever product is left once I have covered my arms for example. I believe this tanner comes in light, medium and dark shades, I use the medium shade  because I like instant effects rather than a gradual tan. I believe that St. Moriz also have a lotion version of this product instead of the mousse.

When you first apply the tan the colour does look a bit scary, but if you let it develop for about 8-10 hours and then take a shower, the colour washes to a lovely golden brown. Do remember to blend and don't leave any harsh lines otherwise you could look a tad weird! Also if you are planning to tan for an event I would recommend tanning two nights before so that if you miss any bits or feel like you need an extra layer you can apply some more the following night.

Another tip is to apply before you go to bed and leave over night. Do make sure though that you wear an old t-shirt for bed or something that you don't mind getting a bit of tan on. I have never had problems with tan on my bed sheets but do bare in mind that this might happen. Once you wake up in the morning the tan does look dark but as I mentioned, after a shower the colour is perfect.

This tan does a have distinct smell as do most tanners but it isn't unpleasant or nasty.

Hope you enjoyed this post and do bare in mind that this my opinion and my favourite products to use! :)
