If any of you are planning to go away this summer or even if you live in a hot climate, here are some of the summer skincare items that I use in the sun which might be helpful or give you some ideas for your summer skincare...
Looking after your skin in the sun is very important so matter what skin tone you have!
I have very fair skin which burns easily and I have a lot of freckles
I use various products to protect and look after my skin in the summer...
Obviously suncream is a must in the summer and my favourite brand is Nivea. They feel nice on the skin and aren't too greasy!
I usually use factor 30 or higher when I first arrive in a hot country and tend to change to a factor of 20 after being in the sun for a week or once I have a bit of a base colour.
As I mentioned I have very fair skin and I am prone to burning if I do not wear a high enough factor suncream. If I do burn I will always apply factor 50 or stay out of the sun altogether to ensure that the burn doesn't get any worse! Burn on burn is not fun!
If you are fair skinned like me do not be embarrassed to wear a high factor suncream embrace your skin and look after it! Damaging your skin with sun burn is not worth it!
Always remember to reapply suncream every hour or so and especially after you have been in the water... even if a suncream claims to be water resistant, if you have been in the water for a long period of time chances are the suncream will have pretty much washed off entirely!
Remember to always slather cream on those areas which are vulnerable to the sun such as your shoulders, your forehead and nose, as well as the tops of your feet!
Sun glasses are a must in the sun as the sun can be equally as damaging to your eyes as it can to your skin! This pair are from Next and they came with this handy pouch to protect them.
When buying sunglasses you must check that they protect your eyes completely from UV light, they should have a sticker on the lens indicating this. In addition to sunglasses, wearing a summer hat is a good idea to keep your face out of the sun altogether!
If you're looking for a bit of coverage on your face when in the sun but don't want to wear a full face of makeup, BB creams can be a good alternative...
These BB creams are perfect for days out in the sun as they contain an SPF of 35 and 20 but they also provide a little coverage. The Smashbox BB cream in particular lasts really well throughout the day and doesn't run or smudge when out sweating in the sun!
However these products are not water proof and I would not suggest relying on them completely to protect your face from the sun... make sure you apply plenty of suncream on your face throughout the day as your skin is delicate and sun damage on your face can cause premature ageing!
After a long day in the sun it is important to rehydrate your skin! I love this new spray moisturiser from Vaseline, it's so quick and easy to apply... Click here to see my full review of this product.
If you want a more intense moisturise, body butters like this Mango flavour from the Body Shop are good and come in a variety of scents.
Another way to moisturise and look after your skin after a long day in the sun is to use an aftersun...
These are two of my favourite products... Vaseline hydrating moisturiser with Aloe and the Soltan aftersun which is from Boots. Both do a similar job but I would suggest using either an aftersun or Aloe gel if you get sun burnt. There also some medicinal options for severe sunburn which you can usually get from a chemist or pharmacy.
Aftersun both moisturises your skin and can prolong your tan! Even use aftersun alongside a moisturiser for extra silky hydrated skin!
These are my essentials to look after my skin in the sun, most of the products mentioned are really affordable and are available in most supermarkets or drugstores.
Hopefully this is helpful and has given you some ideas for your summer holiday/vacation.
Have a wonderful summer!
